Catering Vehicles
Buying catering vehicles isn’t simply a matter of getting the biggest van or truck you can afford. There are many things that you have to think about. The one thing you shouldn’t do is rush.
Buying vs. Leasing
First decide if you actually need to buy the vehicle. If your business only involves occasional catering, it is more cost effective to just lease the vehicle. Buying will be necessary if catering is done on a regular basis.
Old or New: What to Buy
The advantage of buying a secondhand catering van is it’s cheaper. However, the savings you get will be determined by the status of the vehicle. If it needs frequent repairs, then the maintenance cost is going to offset your savings.
Purchasing a new catering vehicle means lower maintenance costs. Plus it will have a warranty. The drawback is the initial cost is high.
Those with a limited budget are better off buying used vans or trucks. However, you should invest in a quality secondhand vehicle. Look for one that is still in good condition at a reasonable price.
What to Look For
These vehicles have different features, and you should get the one that fits your catering needs. But no matter what the vehicle is, it must be clean. In the catering business, nothing creates a better impression than a clean van or truck.
In terms of equipment, this will vary too. Cupboards, counters and water systems are now standard. Other equipment that you’ll need are a freezer, fridge, griddle and tea earn. If you intend to cater specialty food, desserts or delicacies, other equipment will be needed.
The vehicle should also have a gas safety valve, sufficient air vents, a fire extinguisher and other safety utilities. Depending on where you’re operating, there may be other requirements.
Other Reminders
Don’t buy unique, one of a kind vehicles because it’ll be hard to look for spare parts. Instead, look for models with common parts. Mechanics will also have an easier time repairing them.
Don’t forget to check the insurance cost. The policies will depend on where you live, so do some research on the state laws. Make sure the transactions are all legal.
With a catering vehicle, getting your catering business up and running will be easier to do. Although buying requires a lot of research, you’ll realize it will be worth it when you start raking in the profits.
